Day Two of the Wildcat Invitational in the Books for DePaul
EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 45 DePaul women's tennis team notched five wins on day two of the Wildcat Invitational to bring its weekend win total to 10. Cali Gustafson and Kirsten Gambrell picked up singles victories for the Blue Demons, while Sandra Zmak accounted for two of the doubles wins.
Facing student-athletes from No. 2 Northwestern and No. 22 Vanderbilt, the Blue Demons had their hands full against the high caliber teams. Zmak paired with both Kirsten Gambrell and Gustafson to dispose of Vanderbilt's Hannah Blatt and Megan Gornet twice by scores of 8-4 and 8-3, respectively.
Also earning a "W" was the newly paired Selma Salkovic and Gia McKnight, who defeated of Vandy's Catherine Newman and Erica Robertson, 8-5.
Gustafson and Anna Redecsi suffered the only doubles loss of the day, falling to Rachael Dillon and Keilly Ulery, 8-3.
In singles action, Gustafson got the better of Megan Gornet, cruising through a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set victory.
Gambrell picked up the sole win over Northwestern, topping Linda Abu Mushrefovam 6-0, 6-2.
Unable to find her rhythm, Redecsi fell to No. 31 Newman, while Salkovic also suffered a loss to a ranked opponent. The Wildcat's Kate Turvy, ranked No. 85, defeated Salkovic 6-1, 6-4.
McKnight found herself in an evenly-matched battle with Blatt, but fell just short in the first-set tiebreaker. Momentum continued to swing Blatt's way, as she won the second stanza, 6-1, while Zmak suffered a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Elena Chernyakova.
Two rounds of singles begin on Sunday at 9 a.m. and conclude the Wildcat Invitational.
