Women's Tennis Dominates on Opening Day
CHICAGO The DePaul women’s tennis team opened its 2008 dual campaign in successful fashion on Saturday with home-court victories over Butler and Western Illinois. The Blue Demons posted a 6-1 win over the Bulldogs before sweeping the Westerwinds, 7-0, at the Lakeshore Athletic Club. DePaul opened the day by taking all three doubles flights from Butler. Seniors Gergana Ganeva and Anja Mihaldinec posted an 8-4 victory over Molly Casperson and Becky Jenkins at No. 1, while junior Dunja Antunovic and sophomore Kirsten Gambrell defeated Michelle Hawes and Tiffany McLoughlin, 8-2, in the second frame. Senior Beatrix Csordas and freshman Selma Salkovic notched an 8-2 victory over Gabriella Bobrowski and Natali Jaimes at No. 3. The Blue Demons kept up their pace as they defeated the Bulldogs in five singles matches. Antunovic topped Casperson, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1, while Salkovic rolled past McLoughlin, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3. Gambrell posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jenkins at No. 4 and Csordas topped Bobrowski, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5. The No. 6 match saw Mihaldinec coast to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Hawes. The nightcap was all DePaul, as the Blue Demons swept the Westerwinds in doubles play before winning all six singles matches. Antunovic and Gambrell recorded an 8-2 victory over Amanda Griffin and Kim Lennartsson at No. 1, while Ganeva and Mihaldinec defeated Ashley Clark and Yana Meinert, 8-0 in the No. 2 match. Salkovic and Csordas rounded out the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win over Kate Kennedy and Courtney Brooks at No. 3. The top singles match saw Antunovic roll past Griffin, 6-0, 6-2, while Ganeva recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Lennartsson at No. 2. Salkovic defeated Clark, 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 3 match and Mihaldinec posted a 6-2, 6-1 win against Meinert at No. 5. Senior Bojana Murisic delivered a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Stephanie Baumer at No. 6, while Gambrell closed out the evening with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kennedy in the No. 4 match. The Blue Demons (2-0) travel to the Rockies next weekend for road matches at Colorado and Denver. The Blue Demons face the Buffaloes on Friday at 5 p.m. (CST) before challenging the Pioneers on Saturday at 3 p.m.
