Women's Tennis Falls to No. 24 LSU

LOS ANGELES The No. 63-ranked DePaul women’s tennis team fell to No. 24-ranked Louisiana State today in the ITA National Team Indoor Qualifying rounds hosted by UCLA.  The Blue Demons fall to a 3-1 overall team record, while the Tigers improve to 3-0.

In the battle for the doubles point, LSU claimed the first win as No. 36 doubles tandem Dunja Antunovic and Kirsten Gambrell fell to No. 17 Megan Falcon and Mykala Hedberg, 8-2.  The Blue Demons answered with a decisive victory from Anna Redecsi and Selma Salkovic, who beat Hanna Robinson and Whitney Wolf, 8-3.

With the doubles point still up for grabs, all eyes were on Gia McKnight and Sandra Zmak, who were in the midst of a point-for-point battle with Nicole Kantor and Staten Spencer.  After the DePaul pair went ahead 4-3, the Tigers rallied for three straight games to take a 6-4 advantage.  The Blue Demons answered right back, taking three straight games of their own.  Despite a 7-6 lead, McKnight and Zmak were unable to claim the final point, and lost the match 9-7.

Heading into singles play, No. 109 Antunovic went up against No. 5 Falcon in the top match.  After Antunovic tied the first set at 4-4, Falcon replied with eight straight games to win the match 6-4, 6-0 to put LSU up 2-0.

McKnight faced Kantor in the No. 4 singles slot.  The freshman fell to an overall record of 15-5 after losing in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.  Kantor improved her record to 14-5.

Zmak earned DePaul’s lone point, beating Robinson 6-2, 6-1 to cut LSU’s lead to 3-1.  However, the No. 3 singles match concluded just seconds after Zmak’s win.  Whitney Wolf defeated Salkovic , 6-0, 6-3, to clinch the team victory.

Because the Tigers had finalized the win, the remaining matches-in-progress were suspended.  Redesci and Katarina Milinkovic had both won their first sets, and were leading in the second when their matches were called.

The Blue Demons face No. 66 Minnesota tomorrow in the Los Angeles Tennis Center at 11 a.m. (CST)
