Women's Tennis Tops No. 33 Boise State, 5-2
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The No. 46 DePaul women's tennis team overpowered No. 33 Boise State in the consolation match of the ITA National Indoor Qualifer on Sunday at Ecks Tennis Pavilion. The Blue Demons won the match 5-2 and improve to 3-1 on the young season.
The Blue Demons gained momentum heading into singles play by winning all three doubles matches. Katarina Milinkovic and Gia McKnight improved to 8-3 on the season and were the first to finish as the tandem dominated Bianca Jochimsen and Stephanie Jasper for an impressive 8-2 victory.
The convincing win energized the Blue Demon squad as Sandra Zmak and Kirsten Gambrell came from behind and clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win over Elyse Edward and Rocio Frej. The No. 9 pair of Anna Redecsi and Selma Salkovic completed the doubles shutout as they defeated the No. 24 ranked tadeum of Elyse Edward and Rocio Frej, 8-7.
Energized by her doubles win, Milinkovic overpowered Jochimsen as she lost just one game and took the match, 6-0, 6-1, and was the first to finish at No. 3. Like a good doubles partner, McKnight duplicated Milinkovic's feat as she topped Edward in the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-0 and the Blue Demons took a 3-0 lead with four matches still being contested.
Boise State (2-2) won the No. 6 match, while Salkovic clinched the DePaul victory with an impressive 6-0, 6-3, win over Lauren Megale.
The Blue Demons' final point of the match came when Sandra Zmack overtook Jasper 6-1, 7-5.
DePaul returns to action next weekend at North Carolina State and No. 39 Wake Forest Feb. 5-6.
