NEW YORK – DePaul junior Patricia Fargas has been named the BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.

The announcement comes just two days after the Blue Demons capped a perfect 3-0 weekend with a convincing 7-0 home win over UIC.

Fargas is the second DePaul player to garner the award this season. Kelsey Lawson picked up the honor two weeks ago.

Fargas went a combined 5-0 in singles and doubles play over the weekend, playing in the No. 1 slot in each match. In Friday’s (Jan. 31) 4-0 win over No. 25 TCU, the Barcelona, Spain, native teamed with Ana Vladutu to defeat the Horned Frogs’ Millie Nichols and Seda Arantekin, 6-3. In addition, Fargas was just one game away from beating Mimi Fotopoulos in the No. 1 singles match; she led 6-3, 5-2 before the match was stopped shortly after the Blue Demons sealed the victory. Fargas would have finished the weekend 6-0 had the match been completed.

On Saturday (Feb. 1) against No. 65 Louisville (6-1 win), Fargas beat Julia Fellerhoff (6-4, 6-4) in singles after she, along with Vladutu, topped Manuela Velasquez and Rebecca Shine in doubles, 6-3.

Fargas finished up the weekend with a pair of wins against UIC on Sunday (Feb. 2). She beat Natalia Kuvakina in singles play (6-4, 6-2) and the duo of Fargas and Vladutu dominated Kuvakina and Kathryn Sharples in doubles, 6-0.

"Patricia had a great weekend," said head coach Mark Ardizzone. "She was 5-0 and was a game away from a 6-0 weekend. Playing number one singles and doubles every match never allows you to take a break and she has done a great job of keeping and raising her level of play. She is the team energizer and is really deserving of this award."

Fargas is 12-7 overall for the 2013-14 season and 2-1 in dual singles play this spring, all three of those matches coming in the No. 1 position. In addition, she is a perfect 4-0 in doubles play this dual season, going 3-0 in the No. 1 slot and 1-0 at No. 2. In the fall, Fargas became the first Blue Demon to reach the singles semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regional twice in her career.

Fargas and the Blue Demons are ranked No. 74 in the latest ITA National Poll but picked up two critical wins over ranked opponents last weekend. The next team poll will be released on Feb. 11.

DePaul (4-1) heads to Iowa City, Iowa, for its next two matches. On Saturday (Feb. 8), the Blue Demons play No. 72 Oregon (4-0) at 1 p.m. in neutral territory before playing Iowa (2-2) the following day at 11 a.m.
