CHICAGO – DePaul freshman Rebeca Mitrea was named the BIG EAST Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week it was announced on Tuesday by the league office.   Mitrea helped the Blue Demons to an upset of No. 36 SMU last week.

The Blue Demon freshman won her 10th-straight singles match with her 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kris Roberts in the fourth spot.  Mitrea is 4-0 in duals during the spring, while her singles winning streak dates back to Oct. 20, 2011.

On the doubles court, Mitrea paired with Patricia Fargas in the number two position for a dominating 8-4 win over Ashley Turpin and Elena Fayner.  The win improved the Blue Demon pair to 9-3 on the season, while the duo is 4-1 in duals.

DePaul’s win over No. 36 SMU is the first ranked win for DePaul since April 24, 2010 when the Blue Demons topped then-No. 24 USF in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship.

This is Mitrea’s first weekly award, while Blue Demon head coach Mark Ardizzone has seen 11 of his student-athletes earn the honor since DePaul joined the BIG EAST in 2005-06.

The Blue Demons return courts this weekend in Wisconsin.  DePaul plays the Badgers on Friday before tangling with N.C. State in a neutral court dual on Saturday.
