DePaul Falls to Illinois
URBANA, Ill. The No. 60 DePaul women’s tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss at Illinois on Friday. Freshman Selma Salkovic gave the Blue Demons a singles victory at the Atkins Tennis Center. Salkovic battled Momei Qu to a three set win at No. 4 singles. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Salkovic fought back to take the second set, 7-6, and the final frame, 6-2. The DePaul freshman improves to 6-1 in dual-season singles play. Five of the evening’s singles matches were decided in three sets. Junior Dunja Antunovic suffered a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 loss to Megan Fudge in the top match, while senior Gergana Ganeva dropped a 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 decision in the No. 2 match. Freshman Katarina Milinkovic lost, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 3 singles and sophomore Kirsten Gambrell fell, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 6. Ganeva and Mihaldinec posted DePaul’s lone doubles victory as they topped Annie McCarthy and Alejandra MezaCuadra, 9-8, in the No. 3 match. DePaul (5-2) returns to competition on Sunday with a noon (CST) dual at No. 46 Iowa. The Blue Demons and Hawkeyes meet at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex in Iowa City, Iowa.
