Women's Tennis Opens Conference Season
CHICAGO – Women’s tennis opens conference play this weekend at Cincinnati as they face Memphis on Saturday at 3 p.m. and then match up against the host Bearcats at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Blue Demons are 7-6 this season. Last weekend, they swept Bowling Green 7-0 and defeated Ball Sate 6-1 on the road but could not stop Western Michigan.
Marina Parashkevoa was back on the roster after having taken some time out due to an injury. She did not seem affected by her time out as she captured all three singles matches on her return.
Memphis enters the weekend on four-game winning streak. Three of those wins came last weekend after the Tigers knocked off UT-Chattanooga, No. 75 Georgia State, and Tennessee Tech in three days. Junior Marlene Dirnstorfer was just named Player of the Week by Conference USA for her efforts in all three meets. She went 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in No. 2 doubles. Memphis is 4-2 and is coached by Charlotte Peterson in her 25th season with the Tigers.
Coached by Carol Tanner, Cincinnati is 3-1 so far in their spring season. The Bearcats had a week off after splitting a pair, losing to No. 72 Eastern Michigan and defeating Bowling Green. The team is led by junior Lindsey Molony and senior Kushchehr Italia. Molony will take the No. 1 spot in singles while Italia will take the No. 3 duties. Both will pair up together to face DePaul’s No. 1 doubles team.
