Women's Tennis Upsets No. 51 Purdue
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The No. 69 DePaul women’s tennis earned a 6-1 road victory over No. 51 Purdue on Sunday. The Blue Demons won the doubles point before taking five singles matches from the Boilermakers at the Schwartz Tennis Center. DePaul (9-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) opened the dual with a pair of victories in doubles play. Junior Dunja Antunovic and sophomore Kirsten Gambrell improved to 7-1 in spring doubles play with an 8-3 win over Cigdem Duru and Joanna Craven in the No. 2 match. Senior Anja Mihaldinec and freshman Selma Salkovic topped Anna Dzeva and Alejandra Boeker, 8-5, at No. 3. Mihaldinec and Salkovic are now a perfect 4-0 when playing at No. 3 doubles. The top singles match saw Antunovic raise her spring record to 7-5 as she rolled past Brook Beier, 6-4, 6-2. Senior Gergana Ganeva picked up a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Duru at No. 2 singles, while Salkovic earned her 11th singles win of the spring with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Stephanie Wooten at No. 3. Freshman Katarina Milinkovic defeated Dzeva, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 singles and Gambrell posted her ninth win of the dual season with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Boeker at No. 6. Purdue (2-7) earned its sole point at No. 4 singles when Craven topped senior Beatrix Csordas, 6-3, 6-1. DePaul head coach Mark Ardizzone now stands three wins shy of his 200th career victory. The Blue Demons have won their last four duals as Ardizzone’s career record moves to 197-113. DePaul returns to action next weekend with a Saturday dual at Indiana and a Sunday neutral-court meeting with Rutgers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
