Women's Tennis Rolls Past Rutgers
MILWAUKEE, Wis. The No. 57 DePaul women’s tennis team posted a 6-1 neutral-court victory over BIG EAST Conference rival Rutgers on Sunday. The Blue Demons swept doubles play before taking five singles points from the Scarlet Knights at the Helfaer Tennis Center.
DePaul (10-4, 3-0 BIG EAST) opened the dual with a trio of doubles victories. Seniors Gergana Ganeva and Beatrix Csordas edged Polina Zaretser and Amy Zhang, 8-6, in the top match, while junior Dunja Antunovic and sophomore Kirsten Gambrell cruised past Katrina Elder-Bush and Christine Tran, 8-1, in the No. 2 match. With the win, Antunovic and Gambrell improve to 8-2 in dual-season doubles competition. The No. 3 match saw senior Anja Mihaldinec and freshman Selma Salkovic post an 8-0 shutout over Katherine Arlak and Caitlin Baker.
The Blue Demons kept rolling in singles play with five victories. Ganeva won her ninth match of the spring with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Zhang at No. 2, while Salkovic improved to 12-2 in dual-season singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Arlak in the No. 3 match. Freshman Katarina Milinkovic notched a 6-2, 6-2 win over Baker at No. 4 and Gambrell slipped past Tran with a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (6) victory in the No. 5 spot.
DePaul won the No. 6 singles match by default.
Next weekend keeps the Blue Demons in Chicago for a trio of duals at Lakeshore Athletic Club. DePaul hosts a doubleheader with Northern Illinois and Bradley on Saturday before Illinois State visits on Sunday.
