Women's Tennis Defeats Illinois State
CHICAGO The No. 51 DePaul women’s tennis team capped a successful home weekend on Sunday with a 6-1 victory over Illinois State. The Blue Demons won the doubles point before taking five singles matches from the Redbirds at Lakeshore Athletic Club.
DePaul closed out a weekend of perfect doubles play by winning all three matches on Sunday. Seniors Gergana Ganeva and Anja Mihaldinec cruised to an 8-1 victory over Tanja Hrovatic and Katie O’Riley in the No. 3 match before junior Dunja Antunovic and sophomore Kirsten Gambrell finished an 8-3 win over Julia Zubkova and Carolyne Parent at No. 2 doubles. The Blue Demons completed their doubles sweep when senior Beatrix Csordas and freshman Selma Salkovic wrapped up an 8-5 win over Katri Miller and Veronique Parke-Bedard in the top match.
The Blue Demons stayed in control during singles action as they won all but the No. 2 match. Antunovic earned her ninth victory of the dual season with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Miller in the top match, while Salkovic improved to 15-2 in spring competition with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Parent at No. 3. Freshman Katarina Milinkovic topped Parke-Bedard, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 4 match before Csordas defeated Hrovatic, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5. Gambrell raised her spring record to 13-4 when she posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over O’Riley in the No. 6 match.
Sunday’s victory over Illinois State (4-5) marked DePaul’s eighth win in the last nine duals.
DePaul (13-4, 3-0 BIG EAST) returns to competition on Thursday, March 27 with a noon (CST) dual at Florida Atlantic.
