Blue Demons Dominate Over Marquette
CHICAGO The No. 39 DePaul women’s tennis team was able to rebound back from yesterday’s tough loss to pick up a BIG EAST Conference win against Marquette today, 7-0. The Blue Demons improved to 17-4 (3-1 BIG EAST), while the Golden Eagles fell to 15-7 (5-1 BIG EAST). Beginning in doubles play, Anna Redecsi and Selma Salkovic quickly tallied a win in the top match, defeating Paola Calderon and Kylie Moore, 8-2. Dunja Antunovic and Katarina Milinkovic clinched the doubles point with their 8-4 win versus Christina Ruiz and Robin Metzler. DePaul jumped to a 3-0 lead after Gia McKnight and Milinkovic recorded wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 matches, respectively. McKnight beat Rachael Hush, 6-4, 6-4, and improved her overall singles record to 28-7. Milinkovic lost just two games in her straight-set victory over Metzler. Salkovic clinched the match for the Blue Demons in the No. 3 singles match. After taking the first set from Christina Ruiz, 6-1, the sophomore put the second stanza away by a score of 6-2. Redecsi finished soon after, with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Olga Fischer. In the No. 1 match, Antunovic defeated Calderon 6-2, 6-4, recording her 22nd win of the season. The lone Blue Demon senior will be honored next weekend in her final matches on the courts of the Lakeshore Athletic Club. In the final match, Sandra Zmak and Moore were dead locked, having gone to a tiebreaker in the first two sets. The coaches elected to go to a tiebreaker-format third set, in which the duo continued to go point-for-point. Zmak pulled ahead and eventually won the match, 6-7, 7-6, 1-0. The team returns to action next Friday, April 10, when they host Northern Illinois in its final home meet of the season. Competition gets underway at 6 p.m. (CST)
