Blue Demons Compete at the Lakeshore Athletic Club One Last Time

CHICAGO The No. 41-ranked DePaul women’s tennis team gear up for the last weekend of regular-season competition as they host Northern Illinois on Fri., April 10, before traveling to Ohio to take on BIG EAST Conference rival Cincinnati on Saturday.  Senior Dunja Antunovic will be recognized at the final home event, taking place at noon (CST) in the Lakeshore Athletic Club.

Antunovic, a 2008 recipient of the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, currently holds a career record of 77-31 in singles play, and is 77-49 in doubles matches.  Last weekend, after dropping a match to a powerful No. 3-ranked Notre Dame, Antunovic decisively won against Marquette’s Paola Calderon, 6-2, 6-4.

During last fall’s tournament portion of the season, Antunovic, along with junior Kirsten Gambrell, set a new precedent for the Blue Demons during the ITA Midwest Regional.  The unseeded tandem eliminating the No. 1 and No. 7 seeds to earn a berth in the championship match; a program first.  Antunovic also made it to the singles semifinal round, the deepest any DePaul tennis player has gone in the bracket.

The Blue Demons (17-4, 3-1 BIG EAST) welcome Northern Illinois in a nonconference match up on Friday.  The Huskies (6-12, 1-4 MAC Conference) most recently defeated Western Illinois, 4-3, in a league match.

The Bearcats (14-6, 5-1 BIG EAST) boast a five-match winning streak, including a string of wins over four conference opponents.  They host Pittsburgh on Friday before welcoming DePaul on Saturday at 1 p.m. (CST) on the courts of the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center.

BIG EAST Player of the Week Anna Redecsi goes into this weekend after tallying a 3-1 record last time out.  The junior notably defeated No. 36 singles-ranked Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame in straight sets, while posting a pair of wins versus Marquette on the following day.  This is the second time Redecsi has been given the conference’s weekly award, and the third for the program this season.

The two matches mark the end of the regular season.  Following this weekend, DePaul travels to Tampa, Fla. for the BIG EAST Championships on April 16-18.

Lakeshore Athletic Club is located at 1320 W. Fullerton.  Admission is free for all spectators.
