Women's Tennis Enters BIG EAST Championship as the No. 7 Seed

CHICAGO – The DePaul women’s tennis team earned the No. 7 seed for the 2007 BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Championships it was announced today.  The Blue Demons face No. 10 seeded Cincinnati on Thursday for an 8 a.m. (CST) match at the USF Varsity Courts in Tampa, Florida.

 

Thursday’s winner advances to face No. 2 seeded USF in Friday’s quarterfinals at 8 a.m.  The top four seeds of the tournament earned a first-round bye.  Semifinals take place on Saturday and the tournament championship is played on Sunday.

 

DePaul posted an overall record of 11-10 and a BIG EAST record of 4-3 during an injury plagued season.  Dunja Antunovic notched a 24-5 singles record and is currently ranked No. 88 in the FILA/ITA Division I national poll. 

 

The Blue Demons fell, 4-3, to the Bearcats on March 31 in Cincinnati.  Due to injuries, DePaul was forced to play the dual shorthanded.  Kirsten Gambrell, Anja Mihaldinec and Antunovic won their respective singles matches.

 

Notre Dame holds the top seed in the tournament, while the Bulls are No. 2 and Louisville sits at No. 3.  Marquette carries the No. 4 seed followed by No. 5 West Virginia and No. 6 Syracuse.  After DePaul, the field is rounded out by Seton Hall at No. 8, Connecticut at No. 9, Cincinnati at No. 10, St. John’s at No. 11 and Rutgers at No. 12.

 

The Irish are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation, while USF holds a ranking of No. 38 and Louisville stands at No. 71 in the poll.

 

The 2006 BIG EAST Championship saw the No. 4 seeded Blue Demons notch a 4-2 win over fifth-seeded St. John’s in the quarterfinals.  DePaul fell, 4-0, to top-seeded Notre Dame in the semifinals and came up short, 4-2, to No. 3 seeded Louisville in the consolation championship.
