CHICAGO - DePaul women's tennis was named the fifth seed overall in the 2013 BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship, the league office announced on Tuesday. The Blue Demons will open the tournament against 12th-seeded Providence on Thursday, April 18 at 11:00 a.m. CT.

DePaul (12-9, 2-4 BIG EAST) will look to advance to face the winner of the match between four seed Syracuse and 13th-seeded Connecticut at 11:00 a.m. CT on Friday.

DePaul finished tied for third at last year's event and will lean on strong singles play to attempt to move forward in the tournament. The Blue Demons feature four regulars in the lineup with 15 wins and two more with double-digit totals.

Led by top spot stalwart Matea Cutura, who is 15-6 in dual matches and ranked No. 84 in the latest ITA Poll, the Blue Demons closed the season with wins in three-of-five outings.

Sophomore Patricia Fargas enters the tournament on a roll after taking her past five matches at the second spot in the lineup and earning BIG EAST Player of the Week honors a week ago. Five spot regular Jarret Fisher also closed the year with five consecutive singles victories and leads the team with 27 overall wins going back to the fall.

Scouting the Friars

Providence enters the tournament at 13-6 overall and 2-3 in league play, most recently dropping a conference match against St. John's, 6-1, to close out the regular season.

The Friars posted their most wins since the 1999-00 season behind the strong play of senior Marisela Aviles-Duron at first singles. The Tegucigalpa, Honduras-native put together a 21-13 overall record while going 11-6 at the top spot during dual match play.
