Women's Tennis Hosts Marquette in Final Home Match of the Year
April 17, 2014
CHICAGO -- The DePaul women's tennis team hosts Marquette on Saturday afternoon in its final home match of the year.
Match time between the Blue Demons (18-3, 3-0) and Golden Eagles (12-8, 2-0) is slated for 2 p.m.
The No. 40 Blue Demons have put together a spectacular regular season that they hope to cap with a win over their conference rivals. From Jan. 31 to March 27, the team rattled off 16 consecutive wins and climbed to as high as No. 25 in the ITA National Tennis Polls. A loss to No. 26 Rice on April 5 snapped the streak.
DePaul enters the Marquette match fresh off a dominating 6-1 triumph over Cincinnati last Sunday (April 13) in Chicago. DePaul won the doubles point and 5-of-6 singles matches to clinch the victory. In the win, senior Kelsey Lawson, who will be playing her final match in Chicago on Saturday, won her 101st career singles match, winning in the No. 4 slot. She is 101-50 in singles matches during her tenure as a Blue Demon.
As a team, DePaul is 92-26 in dual singles matches and 40-12 in dual doubles play. Lawson, Patricia Fargas, Jasmin Kling, Zaina Sufi, Rebeca Mitrea and Ana Vladutu have combined for 91 of those 92 singles wins. In addition, Vladutu comes into the Marquette match ranked No. 107 nationally.
The Marquette match comes just five days before the 2014 BIG EAST Championships in Flushing, N.Y. The four-day tournament begins on April 24.
