Women's Tennis Advances to BIG EAST Championship Semifinals
TAMPA, Fla. The DePaul women’s tennis team recorded a 4-1 victory over Marquette during Friday’s quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Conference Championship. The No. 5 seed Blue Demons took the doubles point and three singles matches from the No. 4 seed Golden Eagles at the USF Varsity Courts. DePaul advances to Saturday’s semifinals to face top-seed Notre Dame.
DePaul secured the first point of the dual with a pair of doubles wins. Senior Beatrix Csordas and freshman Selma Salkovic defeated Lauren Little and Shannon Brown, 8-4, in the top match. The No. 2 match saw junior Dunja Antunovic and sophomore Kirsten Gambrell post an 8-5 victory over Christina Ruiz and Maria Calbeto.
The Blue Demons clinched the dual with victories in the top three singles matches. Antunovic rolled past Little, 6-2, 6-0 in the top match, while senior Gergana Ganeva delivered a 6-1, 6-2 win over Erin Watkins in the No. 2 slot. Salkovic notched a 6-4, 6-2 win over Calbeto in the No. 3 match.
Marquette (12-13) earned a point at No. 6 singles when Robin Metzler recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gambrell. The No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches were not completed.
DePaul (18-6, 7-2 BIG EAST) takes on Notre Dame tomorrow at 8 a.m. (CST) on the USF Varsity Courts. During the regular season, the Blue Demons suffered a 7-0 road loss to the Irish. Saturday’s winner advances to Sunday’s championship match to face the winner of No. 2 seed Louisville versus No. 3 seed USF.
