Freshman Matea Cutura had a dominant first season in Lincoln Park to earn the program's second consecutive BIG EAST Rookie of the Year award

April 25, 2013

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - DePaul women's tennis placed two on the 2013 All-BIG EAST rosters and Matea Cutura earned the program's second consecutive Freshman of the Year award, announced the conference office on Thursday.

"We are really honored to have two players on the All-BIG EAST Team. With the league getting stronger and stronger each season, making this squad is certainly not easy. Both players are very deserving of the selection. Matea had a great year and deserved to be the Freshmen of the Year. It's really great for our program to receive the last two Freshman of the Year awards."

The Blue Demons, fresh off a third-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships, closed the season with a strong conference tournament and received high-level singles play all year from Cutura and sophomore Patricia Fargas, who was named to her first career All-BIG EAST team.

A Zagreb, Croatia-native, Cutura dominated the first singles spot all season with a 16-7 dual match record (26-9 overall) in her first go around in Lincoln Park. At her finest against top-level competition, Cutura also posted a 5-2 record against ITA-ranked opposition. During the fall season, she took down Northwestern's 12th-ranked Kate Turvy 6-1, 6-3 for the highest-ranked win in program history.

Additionally, Cutura was named BIG EAST Player of the Week twice during the season (Feb. 5, March 13) and was ranked as high as No. 72 in the ITA singles rankings.

Fargas was also a 20-match winner, going 16-9 in dual matches and competing mostly at the number two spot. The sophomore went 5-1 against BIG EAST competition and earned her first BIG EAST Player of the Week award on April 9 in the midst of a season-high six match winning streak. The Barcelona, Spain-native also added a ranked win during the fall season and went 19-10 in doubles play.

Cutura's award also marked back-to-back Freshman of the Year honors for DePaul tennis, as current sophomore Jasmin Kling was the recipient of the award in 2012. Cutura is the fifth DePaul player to earn a conference Freshman of the Year award – Szilvia Kelemen, Gergana Ganeva and Beatrix Csordas all earned the same honor in Conference USA.

Cutura and Fargas became DePaul’s 10th and 11th All-BIG EAST selections since the Blue Demons joined the BIG EAST in 2005-06. They are also Ardizzone’s 21st and 22nd all-conference selections in his 17 seasons at the helm of the DePaul tennis program.

DePaul finished the season 15-10 overall after defeating third-seeded Louisville to capture third-place at the BIG EAST Championship this past weekend. The Blue Demons also spent 10 weeks in the ITA Rankings this season, defeating two nationally-ranked opponents during the dual match season.
