Ganeva and Milinkovic Win Two Doubles Matches at Wilson/ITA Regionals



ANN ARBOR, Mich. Senior Gergana Ganeva and freshman Katarina Milinkovic posted two doubles victories as the DePaul women’s tennis team competed at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Friday.  The Blue Demon pair knocked off tandems from Iowa and Southern Illinois during the tournament’s second day at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.

Ganeva and Milinkovic knocked off Iowa’s Jessica Young and Kelcie Klockenga, 8-5, in the first round before rolling past Southern Illinois’ Michela Cruise and Martina Vianna Ce with an 8-0 victory in the second round.  Saturday’s round of 16 pits Ganeva and Milinkovic against Nazlie Ghazal and Keri Robinson of Northwestern.

Friday’s doubles competition also saw junior Dunja Antunovic and sophomore Kirsten Gambrell record an 8-4 win over Irina Kalashnikova and Veronika Leszayova of Drake in the first round.  The Blue Demon pair bowed out in the second round with an 8-5 loss to Michigan’s Chisako Sugiyama and Whitney Taney.  Senior Bojana Murisic and freshman Selma Salkovic suffered an 8-2 loss to Iowa’s Alexis Dorr and Jacqueline Lee in the first round of doubles action.

After marching to the round of 16 in qualifying singles play on Thursday, Salkovic and Gambrell both exited the draw on Friday.  Salkovic fell, 6-4, 7-5, to Michigan’s Lindsey Howard, while Gambrell came up short in a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 match against Marisa Lambropoulos of Illinois.

Saturday’s competition marks the opening round of the main singles draw.  Antunovic holds the No. 9 seed and faces Leszayova, while Ganeva takes on Purdue’s Cigdem Duru, and Milinkovic competes against Katie Potts of Notre Dame.
