Two Pairs Advance to Quarterfinals

EAST LANSING, Mich. With day three underway, two pairs from the DePaul women’s tennis team advance to the quarter finals of the doubles main draw.  In addition, Dunja Antunovic and Gia McKnight were the lone Blue Demons to advance to the second round in the singles bracket.

Antunovic began her day by teaming up with Kirsten Gambrell to take on Michigan’s Tania Mahtani and Whitney Taney.  Mahtani holds a preseason ITA doubles ranking of No. 22.  The DePaul duo, now 4-2 on the season, dominated the match 8-4.  Up next, they’ll face Michigan State’s Stephanie Kebler and Lindsey Lanergan.

Before tomorrow’s quarterfinal match, Antunovic was able to size Kebler up on the singles court.  After taking the first set 6-1, the Blue Demon senior eliminated the Spartan by a second set score of 6-3.

Anna Redecsi and Sandra Zmak took on the No. 7 doubles pair Lauren Lui and Georgia Rose of Northwestern.  After a hard fought battle, the Wildcats proved to be too much for the Blue Demons, winning the match 8-4.

McKnight and Selma Salkovic won their fourth match in a row by eliminating Megan Fudge and Leigh Finnegam of Illinois.  The pair, who now boast a 5-2 record, advance to the quarterfinals to face Ohio State’s Cami Hubbs and Kristina Keesey.

McKnight joins Antunovic in second round singles play after winning her match this afternoon.  The freshman, who has a team-high singles record of 8-1, defeated Toledo’s Martina Wodzinski, 6-3, 6-3.  McKnight faces her toughest opponent to date in the second round, facing #30 Samantha Murray of Northwestern.

Redecsi, Zmak, Salkovic, and Katarina Milinkovic all dropped their first round singles matches.  A consolation match is scheduled to take place later this evening.

Bracket play resumes on Sunday.  Matches are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
