Salkovic and Redecsi Advance to the Midwest Regional Championship
EVANSTON, Ill. - Last season when a DePaul women's tennis pair advanced to the championship match of the ITA Midwest Regional it was quite an accomplishment.
This year, it is twice as nice.
Anna Redecsi and Selma Salkovic continued the Blue Demon championship match trend as the dynamic duo advanced to the championship match of the ITA Midwest Regional at Northwestern's Combe Indoor Courts on Sunday.
"We preformed really well today under pressure," DePaul head women's tennis coach Mark Ardizzone said following Redecsi and Salkovic victories on Sunday.
"Anna and Selma wanted to handle the pressure of being nationally ranked and the No. 2 seed in the tournament. They played two great matches today and it is always hard to beat one good pair on their home court, let alone two in the same day," Ardizzone added.
The DePaul pair entered the tournament ranked No. 31 nationally. After receiving a first round bye, Redecsi and Salkovic topped a pair from IPFW and Michigan before facing two teams from Northwestern in the quarter and semifinal rounds. Redecsi and Salkovic topped Northwestern's Maria Mosolova and Brittnay Wowchuk along with Samantha Murray and Stacey Lee on Sunday.
Playing in front of the Wildcat home crowd, Redecsi and Salkovic focused on their task and started their day with Mosolova and Wowchuck, who entered the tournament ranked No. 40. Like a veteran tandem, Redecsi and Salkovic put away the home team with an 8-5 victory.
With little rest between matches, Redecsi and Salkovic regrouped and relaxed before taking the court against Murray and Lee. Reeling from their prior win, the Blue Demon pair found themselves down 5-2 but rallied to take the match 8-6.
In a BIG EAST Conference Championship like final, Redecsi and Salkovic take on Notre Dame's Kristy Frilling and Kali Krisik on Monday at 10 a.m. It is the second year that the ITA Midwest Regional has seen a DePaul/Notre Dame doubles championship match.
Redecsi and Salkovic follow current assistant coach Dunja Antunovic and Kirsten Gambrell who advanced to the championship match of the ITA Regional Championship in 2008. Antunovic and Gambrell took home second place honors after they fell to Notre Dame's Kelcy Tefft and Frilling.
Redecsi remains in the main singles draw and plays No. 74 Rika Tatsuno from Michigan on Sunday for the right to advance to the quarterfinals.
