MARTIN, Tenn. - Seven Blue Demons recorded at least one kill as the DePaul volleyball team opened up the First State Skyhawk Invitational with a dominant 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-14) win over Wright State on Friday, August 31 at the Skyhawk Fieldhouse.

The Blue Demons improved to 2-2 on the young season with the win, while the Raiders dropped to 0-5 overall in a match that lasted just 65 minutes.

"It was just a great team win," said head coach Nadia Edwards. "Our setters did a fantastic job distributing the ball. We had great attacking statistics, which stemmed from us being in system. Our passing was the key to everything and it's great momentum for us going into tomorrow."

As a team, the Blue Demons hit a season-high .326 and committed just 10 errors. Wright State could not get much going on the offensive side, hitting just .011 and being forced into 22 errors. DePaul also controlled play at the net, out-blocking Wright State 14-3.

"We had a week to build-up, coming down to Tennessee, for our second weekend. We just tried to tinker with some things we didn't do too well in our first weekend," said Edwards. "I'm pretty happy with the team, especially the way they came out and dominated from the start. We played with a lot of energy and did well with the goals we set for ourselves."

Outside hitter Callie Huebener continued her fast start to the season, leading the Blue Demons with nine kills. The freshman also added seven digs and two solo blocks.

Middle blockers Rachel Aumann and Natalie Rizzo each added seven kills, while junior Vesela Zapryanova (six kills) and freshman Abbie Fleener (five kills) also added to the offense.

DePaul hit a season-high .520 in the first set, committing just one error, to take control of the match right away. After jumping out to a 4-1 lead, the Blue Demons led by as many as eight points on four separate occasions. Zapryanova clinched the 1-0 lead with a set-clinching kill from freshman Aubree Hord, who recorded 25 assists.

In the second stanza, DePaul raced ahead 10-1 early and would not let the Raiders any closer than seven points the rest of the way, limiting WSU to a -.094 hitting percentage, as Huebener finished off the 25-11 set two win with a kill from Hord. The 11 points were the lowest DePaul has held an opponent since NCAA volleyball switched to its current 25-point scoring format in 2008.

An attacking error to begin the third set gave Wright State its only advantage of the match, 1-0, but DePaul quickly rebounded with a four-point run and eventually pulled away, clinching the match with a 25-14 win.

The Blue Demons have two more matches before closing out the weekend, both coming tomorrow at the Skyhawk Fieldhouse. DePaul faces Troy at 11:00 a.m. CT in the day's early match before meeting the tournament hosts, UT Martin, at 7:00 p.m. to close out the invitational.
