Blue Demons Go Back-to-Back, Defeat Chicago State 3-0

CHICAGO - En route to the program's first 2-0 start since 2009 season, DePaul volleyball continued to roll at the DePaul Invitational with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-15) win over Chicago State in the tournament's first session on Saturday at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
With a second straight sweep, the Blue Demons are set to square off for the invitational's championship tonight against McNeese State at 7 p.m.
Every player on the roster made it into the match for DePaul as the Blue Demons connected at a .353 clip, making just 10 errors in the match. On the defensive side of the ball, Chicago State was limited to an .082 hitting percentage as Genesis Reyes and Allyson Rooks racked up 11 digs apiece.
Vesela Zapryanova led all players with 11 kills, hitting .364 and just missing her first double-double of the season with nine digs. In another fine all-around performance, setter Colleen Smith dumped off three kills while recording 17 assists and leading DePaul to attack percentages of .344 and .455 in her two sets.
For the second straight match, DePaul also used its size to an advantage and out-blocked the Cougars 7-3.
Setting the tone early, Zapryanova ripped off six kills on 12 chances in the first set as DePaul raced to a 9-1 advantage. The Blue Demons led by as many as 10 points, 16-6, on their way to a 25-16 victory.
Leading 1-0 in the match, DePaul had its most efficient set in the second. Committing just two errors and hitting .455, the Blue Demons ran away with a 12-point win, 25-13, to put Chicago State on the ropes.
In the last stanza, the home team got off to another quick start and led 7-2 when the Cougars called their first timeout of the set. Out of the stoppage, DePaul got back-to-back kills from Randi Leath and Anastasiya Shutava to stretch its lead to seven -- which was as close as Chicago State would get the rest of the way as the Blue Demons closed out the match, 25-15, and set up a chance for their first 3-0 start since 2004.
The Blue Demons and the Cowgirls are set to play at 7:00 p.m. CT for the DePaul Invitational Championship, while Providence and Chicago State will meet in a consolation match at 4:30 p.m. to kick off the day's second session.
Match Notes: The Blue Demons are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2009 and are gunning for a 3-0 beginning to the season for the first time since 2004, a year in which the Blue Demons won their first four contests... Going back to 2012, the Blue Demons now own a four-match winning streak... the last time the Blue Demons had back-to-back 3-0 wins was at last season's Loyola Challenge, beating Chicago State and South Carolina Upstate Sept 14-15... DePaul improves to 15-0 all-time against Chicago State... the Blue Demons hit .353, which was the team's highest hitting percentage since recording a .390 mark on Oct. 25, 2011 versus Chicago State.
