Sept. 1, 2012
MARTIN, Tenn. - Despite a match and career-high 19 kill performance by junior Vesela Zapryanova, the DePaul volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 14-25, 21-25) decision to Troy on day two of the First State Skyhawk Invitational on Saturday, September 1 at the Skyhawk Fieldhouse.
The Blue Demons fell to 2-3 overall, while Troy improved to 2-3. DePaul will now have the afternoon off before facing the tournament hosts, UT Martin, in tonight's weekend finale at 7:00 p.m.
After a 3-0 sweep against Wright State last night, DePaul kept rolling by taking the first set, 25-23, but could not win another even with Zapryanova posting her best all-around match of the season. The junior outside hitter connected at a season-high .304 clip and added eight digs to go along with two aces.
Defensively, the Blue Demons were led by Allyson Rooks' 16 digs. Freshman libero Tyler Graham also had 10 digs. Fleener recorded the Blue Demons' only block of the match, as Troy dominated at the net with a 14-1 blocking advantage.
In set one, DePaul trailed as late as 15-14 before an ace by Huebener knotted the score. After taking the first set of the match, DePaul led just once in the next two sets. In set four, the Blue Demons were up 16-14 before dropping three straight points. Troy would go onto win a close set and clinch the match, 25-21.
Notes: DePaul fired off seven aces for the third time this season, tying a season-high... the Blue Demons have recorded at least one solo block in every match this season and were only out-blocked for the second time in five matches... Tyler Graham kept her double-digit dig streak alive with 10 more. The freshman has recorded at least 10 digs in all five of her first collegiate matches...
