Volleyball Sweeps SDSU for Fifth Straight Win
Sep 7, 2013
DES MOINES, Ia. - DePaul volleyball moved to 5-0 for the first time since 2001, beating South Dakota State in a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-20, 25-16) on Saturday in its second match of the Drake Invitational at the Knapp Center.
The Blue Demon offense was paced by a pair of sophomores, as both Callie Huebener and Abbie Fleener posted 10 kills. Senior Vesela Zapryanova added eight kills, while classmate Natalie Rizzo landed seven on a match-high .583 hitting percentage.
Overall, DePaul connected at a .321 clip and held SDSU to a .120 attack percentage. For the Blue Demons, it was the fourth time the team has hit .311 or better in their first five matches.
At the net, the Blue Demons used their size advantage to out-block SDSU 10-2
Setter Colleen Smith dished out 30 assists and led the team with nine digs -- narrowly missing a second straight double-double.
DePaul hit .429 overall in the first set and committed just one error, getting off to a 5-1 start on three kills by Fleener and a Smith ace. In a set that was never really in question, the Blue Demons led by as many as 11 (20-9) en route to a 25-14 first win.
In the second frame, things remained tied as late as 14-14 before DePaul began to pull away. A Jackrabbit error followed by a Blue Demon block and Randi Leath kill made it 17-14. DePaul would not let SDSU come closer than two the rest of the way, taking a 2-0 lead with a 25-20 set win.
In the third, the Blue Demons got off to another rapid start with the first five points of the set. Leading 12-5, however, SDSU began to chip away at the DePaul lead. The Jackrabbits would get as close as 13-10 after a 5-1 spurt, but the Blue Demons would recover to take 12-of-18 points to seal the win.
DePaul is back on the court tonight at 5:00 p.m. CT, capping the Drake Invitational against Eastern Illinois.
