CHICAGO- The DePaul volleyball team came up short in a 3-2 (25-22, 17-25, 23-25, 25-16, 16-14) loss against Radford Friday night at McGrath Arena. The Blue Demons fall to 0-7 on the season while the Highlanders improve to 5-5.

The Blue Demons were able to reach season highs with an attack percentage of .214 (63-26-173), 63 kills and 56 assists. Freshman Chelsea Kirkpatrick led the team with 17 kills and senior Christy Landschoot led the team with 33 assists and 16 digs.

DePaul opened the first game with a 6-1 run that forced Radford to take a quick timeout. The Blue Demons continued to have momentum after the Highlanders timeout. DePaul took its lead to 10-5 but Radford would then go on a 6-1 run of its own, to take the game to an 11-11 tie. The match would continue to stay close and became tied again at 22. The Blue Demons would call a timeout late in the game but Radford’s Carly Fleming would end the game at 25-22 with two great serves.

The Blue Demons came out strong and went on a 15-3 run to open the second game. Landschoot began the run by serving for six straight points to give the Blue Demons a 6-0 lead. The Blue Demons stayed in command for the rest of the second set and Kirkpatrick was able to obtain a .750 (6-0-8) attack percentage. The second game would end with the Blue Demons winning 25-17.

The Blue Demons would use their .240 (17-5-50) attack percentage to win the third set 25-23. Kyndell Highland led the team in the third game with a .417 (5-0-12) attack percentage. The game would end on one of Highland’s kills.

The Blue Demons and Highlanders would begin the fourth game by trading points to a 5-5 tie. From there the Highlanders would go on a 14-4 run that forced DePaul to use its second timeout of the match. The Blue Demons continued to work for every point after their timeout. Despite having four total team blocks in the fourth game, the Blue Demons would lose 16-25.

The Blue Demons gave everything they had in the fifth and final set. DePaul was able to have a .286 (11-5-21) attack percentage, its highest of the match and also had 11 kills, three more than Radford. Despite the quality play from the Blue Demons the match would end at 14-16.

DePaul returns to the court tomorrow at 7 p.m. when they play Georgia State in the second game of the DePaul invitational at McGrath Arena.
