CHICAGO- The DePaul volleyball team finished the DePaul Invitational with a 3-2 win over Georgia State. The Blue Demons tallied 113 digs, the most since the Blue Demons played Butler in 2006. DePaul improved to 1-7 and Georgia State dropped to 4-4.

The Blue Demons had three players collect double digit kills, Kate Letcher had 12, Anastasiya Shutava had 16 and Rachel Aumann had 15 and a massive hitting percentage of .577 (15-0-26). Christy Landschoot dished out 50 assists and Chelsea Thurlby came up big defensively with 33 digs, the second most since Ellen Hayes in 2004.

DePaul and Georgia State started the first set with a lot of energy. The teams would trade points to an 11-11 tie. Kyndell Highland would then come up to serve and the Blue Demons would go on 8-1 run. The Blue Demons would control the rest of the set and would close it out at 25-21.

Georgia State started the second set with a 10-3 run. The Blue Demons fought for every point but could not get things going offensively; it was the defense that kept them in the set. Despite DePaul’s 28 digs, Georgia State closed out the set at 25-23.

Georgia State started off the third set strong but the Blue Demons fought back to a 7-7 tie. The Blue Demons would take the lead on a Highland kill to the back right corner. DePaul had the lead until another tie at 19. Georgia State would then win the next three points forcing DePaul to call a timeout. Shutava had a kill to the back left corner out of the timeout, however Georgia State would close out the set 25-23.

Landschoot served for four straight points to begin the fourth set. Georgia State fought to get back in it. With DePaul leading 8-5, Chelsea Kirkpatrick would serve for five straight points. Because of DePaul’s five service aces the Blue Demons led the rest of the set and closed it out at 25-22.

DePaul and Georgia State went back and forth to start the fifth set. When the score was 6-7 in favor of Georgia State, Landschoot served for five straight points. Soon after, Georgia State went on 5-1 run to tie it at 12. DePaul would close it out 15-12, with two great serves coming from Letcher.

The Blue Demons return to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7:00 p.m. and will play Santa Clara.

Notes: The Blue Demons had season highs 113 digs and 58 assists… 113 digs is the most the Blue Demons played Butler in 2006… Chelsea Thurlby came up with 33 digs, the second most since Ellen Hayes in 2004... Christy Landschoots 50 assists against moves her to 2,660 career assists which is 156 away from fourth on DePaul’s all-time record… Sheila Carrol is fourth on the all-time list with 2,816.
