It Took Five

CHICAGO- The DePaul Volleyball team struggled early in a 3-2 (20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 6-15) loss to Santa Clara on Wednesday, Sept. 15th at McGrath Arena. Santa Clara improves to 7-3 and DePaul falls to 1-8. Kate Letcher led the Blue Demons with 15 kills while Molly Creek contributed an impressive .385 (7-2-13) attack percentage.
DePaul began the first set trading points with the Broncos. Santa Clara would take the lead after a 6-6 tie and would control the set from that point on. The Blue Demons would work for every point but could not get the offense working. The Broncos won the set 25-20.
The Blue Demons offense struggled, while Santa Clara was able to post a powerful attack percentage of .438 (19-5-32) in the second set. However, DePaul applied some late pressure to Santa Clara. The pressure forced the Broncos to use a time out with a 23-20 lead. The Broncos would go on to win the next two points.
DePaul would come into the third set rejuvenated. The teams traded points until a 9-9 tie, from there the Blue Demons would go on a 9-4 run. The run was fueled by strong serves from Kyndell Highland. The Broncos would fight their way back into the match and forced the Blue Demons to call a timeout down one, 22-23. DePaul came out of the timeout and won the last three points and won the set 25-23.
The fourth set was close all the way to the end. Creek would put up a blistering .375 attack percentage that boosted the Blue Demons past the Broncos. With the score tied at ten, Creek had a blast to the back right corner to start a Blue Demon 8-3 run. The Broncos worked their way back to a 19-19 tie. The Demons felt the pressure and finished strong to take the set 25-23.
DePaul and Santa Clara would trade points to start the fifth set. But with the score tied at four, the Broncos would close the set going on a 11-2 run.
DePaul plays next at the Miami Best Western Invitational in Miami, Ohio on Friday Sept, 17th against the host team Miami.
