CHICAGO - In its first match of the DePaul Invitational, the host Blue Demons battled late but came up short against visiting Valparaiso, who took the match in straight sets. DePaul falls to 3-8 on the season while the Crusaders move to 9-4.
The opening set looked tight from the start. DePaul and Valparaiso fought back-and-forth eventually reaching a 7-7 deadlock. Two errors by the Blue Demons, however, forced DePaul into a timeout to compose itself. Out of the break, freshman Amy Lanski threw down a thunderous kill to give DePaul some life, but the Crusaders answered with 10 of the next 11 to push the match out of reach. With the score at 19-10, DePaul rattled off four of the next five but Valparaiso put it away at a 25-14 final.
The second set saw the Crusaders take over. Valparaiso caught the breaks and knocked down some crucial blocks in the frame to keep the Blue Demons mostly off the board as the Crusaders went ahead two sets to none in the match.
After dropping the initial set 25-14 and the second set by a 25-8 score, DePaul settled in for the third set and led for much of it. The two squads traded kills with neither trailing by more than three until the Crusaders reached match point. The score was knotted on 11 different occasions--most notably at 16-16--during the match while the lead changed six times. Trailing 23-20, DePaul committed two consecutive ballhandling errors to seal the win for Valparaiso.
The Blue Demons return to action for two matches on Saturday.DePaul opens up the second day of the tournament with an 11 a.m. matchup against San Diego State (4-2), who had fallen earlier on Friday in four sets to Kansas (9-1). While the rest of the squads face off in two matches midday, DePaul will challenge KU at 7:30 p.m. in a "WHITE OUT" affair, where the first 100 Blue Demon students will get a free t-shirt.
