Blue Demons Close DePaul Invitational with Loss to Kansas
Sept. 17, 2011
CHICAGO – In the final match of the 2011 DePaul Invitational, the Blue Demon volleyball team fought eventual first place finisher Kansas to the end but were defeated in three sets by the visiting Jayhawks. With the loss, DePaul moves to 3-10 on the season while Kansas improved to 4-0 in the tournament and to 11-1 on the season.
After the Jayhawks opened the initial set with two points, DePaul tallied five straight starting with a kill by freshman Katie Gamsky and a service ace from sophomore Allyson Rooks. Up 5-2, DePaul’s run was marred by tournament MVP Allison Mayfield who notched her first of 17 kills in the match. After the Jayhawks regained the lead, DePaul leveled the set at 8-8, 12-12, 14-14, and 15-15 before Kansas went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 21-15. The Blue Demons put two more on the board in the set but KU closed it out at 25-18.
A kill by junior Rachel Aumann started off the second frame but Kansas answered with nine consecutive points to grasp a commanding lead. Aumann, who finished the set with three kills in five attempts, provided much of the offense for the Blue Demons, but the early lead proved insurmountable for DePaul as the Jayhawks took the set 25-12.
For the third time in as many matches, DePaul battled in its third set as the Blue Demons revisited their comeback behavior. After falling behind early, DePaul rebounded from a 7-3 deficit to even the score at 8-all before taking its first lead of the set at 9-8. The advantage was short-lived, however, as the Jayhawks tied it and went ahead on a kill and a Blue Demon attack error. DePaul kept it close with KU but the Jayhawks garnered a 23-17 lead. With Kansas on the verge of match point up 24-19, the Blue Demons tallied four straight to pull within one, but the Jayhawks’ Caroline Jarmoc put it away with a kill.
The Blue Demons will resume play in one week with a 2 p.m. matchup against Villanova scheduled for Saturday. That match serves as the Blue Demons’ BIG EAST opener and is to be followed by a 2 p.m. matchup on Sunday against Georgetown.
