CHICAGO - A 19-kill performance by junior Vesela Zapryanova wasn't enough as DePaul volleyball dropped a 3-1 match to visiting Connecticut on Sunday at McGrath-Phillips Arena.

The Blue Demons dropped to 6-13 overall with the setback and are now 1-5 in the BIG EAST Conference. Connecticut improved to 12-8 (3-2 BIG EAST).

Zapryanova was one away from a career-high and had her most efficient match as a Blue Demon, terminating 19 balls on 32 attempts (against just five errors) for a personal best .438 attack percentage. Zapryanova also added seven digs and two block assists in a solid all-around match.

Aiding the attack, freshman Callie Huebener posted 12 kills while Anastasiya Shutava added nine. Middle hitter Natalie Rizzo also recorded seven kills on a .429 hitting percentage.

Junior libero Allyson Rooks reached double figures in digs for the 15th consecutive match with 14 as setter Laura Witt joined her with 10 digs of her own. Witt also connected on 14 assists to give her a fifth double-double on the season. The Blue Demons have had at least one double-double in seven of their past eight matches.

Freshman setter Aubree Hord directed the offense for the majority of the match and finished with 32 assists in leading DePaul to its second-best hitting percentage of the season (.323).

Statistically, DePaul dominated the match but the Blue Demons were undone by some costly defensive miscues and at the service line, where DePaul committed 10 errors. In set one, DePaul got six kills from Huebener and took the first point of the match on a quick kill by Rizzo. The Blue Demons settled in from there, as the set stayed within one or two points until late.

DePaul led by two as late as 17-15 after back-to-back kills by Huebener and Rooks, but UConn would rally to tie the match at 17 and went on a 8-4 run to close out the first set, 25-21.

The Blue Demons came back out of the huddle on fire, however, hitting a season-best .500 in the second set (15 kills, three errors, 24 attempts). Zapryanova finished the second stanza a perfect 6-for-6 as DePaul rolled to a 10-3 set lead early and evened the match, 25-20.

In the third frame DePaul raced ahead early again, going up 11-1 and converting their first six swings into kills. UConn would storm back, however, with a 13-3 run to even the set at 14 all. From the tie, DePaul got kills from Huebener and Shutava to go back up 18-15. The Blue Demons would maintain a two-or-three point lead until the Huskies would get within one at 21-20 on an ace serve. A Mattison Quayle kill evened the match one point later, as UConn would then grab four of the next six points to win 25-23 in a stunning comeback.

Set four saw the Blue Demons recover to hit .348, committing just three errors all frame, as Zapryanova added four more kills to near her career-high. Again, DePaul got off to a fast start and led 5-2 but could not keep the advantage as UConn took the set and the match, 25-20.

The Blue Demons have one date remaining on their current six-match home stand and will next host Notre Dame on Friday, October 12 at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The contest is set for a 7:00 p.m. start.
