CHICAGO – The DePaul volleyball team was edged by Xavier, 3-0 (18-25, 23-25, 22-25), on Saturday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena. Brittany Maxwell led the Blue Demons with 11 kills while Kelsey Horvath totaled 29 assists.

The Blue Demons jumped ahead 6-2 early in the first set. However, Xavier fought back to take a 13-11 lead, prompting a Blue Demon timeout. The Musketeers held on to win the opener 25-18. Rachel Breault led the host with three kills in the opening set.

DePaul took a 9-4 lead early in the second set. For the fifth point of the set, Breault and Brittany Maxwell combined for a loud block above the net. Holding a narrow 17-16 advantage the Blue Demons called a timeout. Out of the stoppage Xavier would outscore DePaul 8-6 for a 25-23 set win.

The Musketeers finished the match in the third set with a 25-22 set win. With the defeat, the Blue Demons drop to 8-15 overall (2-9 BIG EAST).

Maxwell led the Blue Demons with a team-high 11 kills and added seven digs. Horvath added five digs to her 29 assists while Haley Bueser contributed a team-high 13 digs.

The Blue Demons return to action Friday as they travel to Seton Hall for a 6 p.m. ET start. The Seton Hall match is the first of four straight on the road before DePaul plays the final three regular-season matches at home against Villanova, Georgetown and Marquette.
