The DePaul volleyball team fought its way to a 3-2 victory of Syracuse.

CHICAGO- Sophomore Rachel Aumann led the Blue Demons offensively with 17 kills, as the DePaul volleyball team fought its way to a 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 17-25, 25-22, 16-14 ) victory over Syracuse. The Blue Demons improve their overall record to 4-20, and 1-8 in BIG EAST Conference action while the Orange drop to 22-5 and 3-5 in conference play.
DePaul started off strong in the first set, using a team attack percentage of .286 (16-4-42) to control the tempo. Freshman Chelsea Kirkpatrick led the Blue Demons offensively and registered four kills. When the score was at 17-15 in favor of Syracuse, the Blue Demons went on a 6-1 run that was sparked by a well placed kill to the back left corner from Kyndell Highland. DePaul was then able to close the first set out at 25-21.
Despite an attack percentage advantage in the second set, .256 vs. .200, DePaul could not get into a rhythm. Syracuse used Hayley Todd’s seven kills to take the set 25-21.
Momentum was on Syracuse’s side, and the Orange continued to capitalize on DePaul’s lack of offensive rhythm. The Blue Demons only managed a .065 (8-6-31) team attack percentage in the third set. Syracuse closed the set at 25-17.
With the match on the line, Aumann came up with six big kills in the fourth set to propel the Blue Demons to a 25-22 win. Aumann had a match-high .357 (6-1-14) attack percentage while the team tallied 11 kills and had four team blocks.
DePaul jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the beginning of the fifth set but Syracuse fought their way back into the match. The teams would finish the match going point-for-point, until the Blue Demons forced Syracuse to commit an attack error that would end the set at 16-14.
DePaul returns to the court Tuesday for a nonconference match against UW-Milwaukee in Milwaukee. at 7:00 p.m.
Notes: Katherine Knutson has recorded double-digit digs in 20 matches this season... recorded 20 digs in the match against Syracuse... freshman Chelsea Kirkpatrick has been in double-digit kills 10 times this season... Kirkpatrick totaled Blue Demons with 13 kills against Syracuse.
