DePaul Drops Season Finale at Marquette
Nov. 13, 2011
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The DePaul volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-21, 25-11, 25-15) to Marquette on Sunday in its season finale. The Blue Demons concluded the season with a 7-22 record and captured three BIG EAST Conference victories—their most since 2008. In the opening frame, the Blue Demons and Golden Eagles played it close. Despite Marquette attaining an early 8-3 advantage, DePaul hung with the 22-win Marquette squad for much of the set. The Blue Demons pulled back to within one thanks to a kill from senior Molly Creek but the Golden Eagles went on a counter run to put the set out of reach. DePaul brought it back to within three points at 23-20 via back-to-back Marquette errors and a kill by Creek, but the Golden Eagles put the set away at 25-21. The second set did not much resemble the first however, despite close play in the early goings. With the score at 10-7 in favor of Marquette, the Golden Eagles grabbed hold of an insurmountable lead. With Marquette on a 7-1 run, junior Rachel Aumann knocked down a kill to make it 17-9. The Blue Demons managed just two more points in the frame, however, and the Golden Eagles rolled to a 25-11 win. In the third frame, Marquette continued its momentum from before the break. The Golden Eagles took a 5-0 lead from the first serve and forced DePaul into using its first timeout. Out of the timeout, senior Lauren Blasi halted the Marquette run with a kill but the Golden Eagles responded with two more points to make it 7-1. Sammy Geiger, Aumann, and freshman Amy Lanski added kills to make it 8-5 but the early lead proved insuperable for DePaul. The Blue Demons made a concerted effort near the end of the frame but found themselves down 21-15. From there, Marquette rattled off four straight to finish out the match with a 25-15 final set victory. With the final match of the season over, the Blue Demons look to their 2012 Spring season inpreparation for next Fall.
