QUEENS, N.Y. – Vesela Zapryanova put up a team-high 18 kills and finished with her eighth double-double of the season, but it wasn’t enough as DePaul volleyball fell 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 21-25, 25-17) to St. John’s at Taffner Field House on Saturday evening.

Zapryanova, who hit .244 (18-8-41), also added 12 digs but didn’t get much help and finished as the only Blue Demon with a double figure kill total. Freshman middle Randi Leath posted eight kills on a .438 attack percentage in a supporting role.

Defensively, senior libero Allyson Rooks tied for a team-high with 12 digs. Sophomore Colleen Smith posted 34 assists and two blocks from the setter position.

The Blue Demons fell to 16-11 overall and 2-11 in the BIG EAST with the setback. St. John’s got a match-high 21 kills from Aleksandra Wachowicz to improve to 16-14 and 5-9 in the BIG EAST.

DePaul led at 9-8 in the first set off a Zapryanova kill and hit .269 (10-3-28), but fell victim to a 10-4 St. John’s run which turned the one point lead into a 18-13 deficit. From there, the two teams traded points as the Red Storm jumped out 1-0 with a 25-19 win.

Falling behind 2-0 after a 25-18 loss in set two, the Blue Demons regrouped at the break and came out firing on all cylinders in set three.

Hitting a match-high .270 (16-6-37) in the third frame, DePaul was able to extend the match with a tight 25-21 win. The set was tied as late as 20-20, but four straight points – including two Zapryanova kills and another by Abbie Fleener – helped the Blue Demons clinch set point. Zapryanova then put it away with a kill from Smith.

In the fourth, however, the Blue Demons were unable to get much going and hit -.029 (8-9-34) in a 25-17 loss that finished off the match.

DePaul is back on the court tomorrow in South Orange, N.J. to face Seton Hall in a 1 p.m. CT match. The tilt will mark the end of the road season for DePaul, as the team looks to avenge last week’s 3-2 home loss against the Pirates.
