CHICAGO – Thirteen home contests at McGrath-Phillips Arena highlight the 2011 volleyball schedule announced today by head coach Nadia Edwards. Edwards enters her second season in 2011 with a schedule featuring opponents from the Big 10, Big 12 and Pac-12 along with the 14-match BIG EAST slate.

“We have a great schedule ahead of us, it will definitely be a true test of our ability and hard work put in during the off season,” said Edwards. “We are bringing in some high caliber teams into McGrath-Phillips Arena. We have four Friday night home matches scheduled which will allow us to create more of an event and a competitive atmosphere.”

Following the start of practice on Aug. 9, the Blue Demons open the 2011 campaign in Laramie, Wyo., as one of five teams competing at the UniWyo Wyoming Invite. DePaul faces Oregon State and South Dakota on Aug. 26 before playing Gonzaga and host Wyoming on Aug. 27.

DePaul’s competitive schedule features at least six opponents that finished the 2010 season ranked in the top 100 in the NCAA RPI.

“Our returners have made tremendous strides over the winter and spring and with the talent of the incoming freshmen we will have the potential to compete against some high level teams,” said Edwards.

The annual Chicagoland Challenge takes place over Labor Day Weekend at the Flames Athletic Center on UIC’s campus. The Blue Demons and Flames play the second game on Sept. 2 following the Loyola-Northwestern match. The two winners play for the championship on Sept. 3 following the consolation match.

A day after the Chicagoland Challenge, the Blue Demons open the home portion of the schedule on Sunday, Sept. 4 against Montana State.

DePaul returns to tournament play in Cleveland, Ohio on Sept. 9-10 for the CSU Tournament. The Blue Demons are scheduled to face host Cleveland State on Sept. 9 before playing Duquesne and IPFW the following day.

The DePaul Invitational starts a seven-match homestand at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The Blue Demons welcome Kansas, San Diego State and Valparaiso to Lincoln Park for a two-day tournament on Sept. 16-17. DePaul takes on Valparaiso Friday night before facing San Diego State and Kansas on Saturday.

Edwards is looking for a strong start in BIG EAST play as the Blue Demons host the first four league matches. DePaul welcomes Villanova (Sept. 24) and Georgetown (Sept. 25) to Chicago before closing the month with Louisville (Sept. 30) and Cincinnati (Oct. 2).

DePaul continues conference play in October with home matches against Notre Dame (Oct. 14) and USF (Oct. 21) while traveling to West Virginia (Oct. 7), Pittsburgh (Oct. 9), St. John’s (Oct. 28) and Connecticut (Oct. 30). The Blue Demons also travel to Western Illinois on Oct. 18 and host Chicago State on Oct. 25 to conclude the non-conference schedule.

The final home weekend of the regular season is scheduled for Nov. 5-6 as the Blue Demons face Rutgers and Seton Hall. DePaul and Rutgers square off Saturday afternoon before a Sunday Senior Day match against Seton Hall at McGrath-Phillips Arena.

DePaul finishes up the regular-season slate on the road at Syracuse (Nov. 11) and Marquette (Nov. 13). The 2011 BIG EAST Championship is scheduled for Nov. 18-20 at Marquette and NCAA Championship play starts with first-round action on Dec. 1.
