CHICAGO – First-year DePaul volleyball coach Amy Kleyweg announced the 2006 schedule for the team's second season of BIG EAST Conference play. The schedule includes four tournaments and six home BIG EAST matches.
The Blue Demons kick-off the season August 25-26 when they participate in the third annual Chicagoland Classic hosted by Illinois-Chicago. DePaul takes on city rivals Loyola-Chicago and UIC, while Valparaiso joined the tournament mix this season.
DePaul is on the road in September traveling to tournaments at Rice, Western Illinois and Memphis. The Blue Demons face tournament host Rice, Illinois State and Texas-San Antonio while in Houston September 1-2. The following weekend (September 8-9) the squad takes a short bus trip to Macomb, Illinois to play Western Illinois, Eastern Illinois and Butler.
The team's final tournament takes them to former Conference USA rival Memphis for a five-team, two-day tournament. The Blue Demons face Alabama A&M and Central Arkansas on Friday, September 15. Day-two of the tournament pits the former conference foes against one another in a marquee match at 7 p.m. DePaul is also set to play Murray State at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The Blue Demons close out their non conference September schedule with a trip to Valparaiso before kicking off their second BIG EAST season at Villanova and Rutgers on the 23rd and 24th.
DePaul opens on the road in October, traveling to Seton Hall and UW-Green Bay before hosting Syracuse and Marquette at McGrath Arena on October 7 and 8. The home opener with the Orange is slatted for 2 p.m., while the 44th meeting between the Golden Eagles and Blue Demons is set for 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The team breaks from league action to take on city-rival Chicago State on October 10 before facing nationally ranked and 2005 BIG EAST Champion Notre Dame in South Bend on October 13.
The Blue Demons host St. John's and Connecticut, October 20 and 22 before closing out the month at Louisville and Cincinnati on 28th and 29th.
DePaul closes out the regular season in November, traveling to USF November 3 and Georgetown November 5. The Blue Demons finish the regular season at home November 11 and 12 welcoming West Virginia and Pittsburgh for the final conference weekend. Both matches scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The 2006 BIG EAST volleyball championship is slated for November 17-19, where the top eight teams will vie for the league's automatic NCAA Tournament bid in Cincinnati.
