Aug. 9, 2013
CHICAGO - Head coach Nadia Edwards and the Blue Demon volleyball program announced two newcomers to the 2013 roster on Friday, and have officially completed their roster for the upcoming season with the additions of Lexi Chanos and Colleen Smith.
Smith comes to Lincoln Park with prior collegiate experience at Indiana, where she recorded 24 assists in six sets of action as a freshman. She will have three years of eligibility at DePaul and brings a laundry list of accolades from her high school days in the Chicago suburb of Cary, Ill.
A PrepVolleyball All-American as a senior at Cary-Grove High School, Smith earned All-State honors and ranked as one of nation's top recruits at the setter position. She served as captain of her high school team and led the Trojans to a 41-1 record and a No. 1 national ranking as a senior. The team also won a state championship in 2009 and finished as runners-up in 2010.
Chanos comes to DePaul from Madison, Wis. where she was a standout volleyball and track athlete. Lettering for three years in volleyball, she helped Madison Edgewood to state runner-up finishes in 2010 and 2013, as well as a 26-9 overall record and conference, regional and sectional championships in 2013. A defensive standout, Chanos recorded 350 digs as a senior.
As a track athlete, Chanos also had a decorated career as a high jumper. A four-time city champion, she was state runner-up in the event as a senior.
The pair joins freshman JaQuayla Baker, an athletic middle blocker, to form the 2013 recruiting class for the Blue Demons.
DePaul begins its season with a home tournament, the annual DePaul Invitational, hosting Providence at 7:00 p.m. on Aug. 30.
