Aug. 11, 2014
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced Monday that DePaul volleyball, among a record 137 Division I programs, earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2013-14 season.
It was the seventh straight year that the Blue Demons have taken home this award.
"It is an honor to be recognized another year by the AVCA for academic excellence," said head coach Nadia Edwards. "I think it is great that our players understand the importance of not only being competitive on the court, but also in the classroom. It really shows the caliber of athletes that we continue to recruit to the university."
The BIG EAST Conference landed seven teams on the award list, matching its total last season.
Altogether, NCAA Division I recorded their highest-ever total of 137 recipients.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The Blue Demons open up the 2014 campaign on Friday, Aug. 29 when they host the DePaul Invitational inside McGrath-Phillips Arena. DePaul plays Stony Brook on Friday, before facing Bradley and Hampton on Saturday.
