Volleyball Heads Into Second Week of Practice

Chicago, IL- The DePaul Blue Demons volleyball squad took to the court last week for the first time this season. Last week was full of two and three-a-day practices for the team.

“I am pleased with the first week of practice, however I am not satisfied,” Head Coach Dawn Dockstader said.  “The players are in the best shape I have seen any of my teams come into the preseason. They are all physically and mentally ready to take care of business.”

Each day brings new challenges for the team.  Because the team comes into the preseason in top shape, they are able to focus on perfecting their techniques and building team cohesion.

“Janet Goreham and Amie West bring intensity and energy to each practice,” Dockstader said.  They inspire my team to work harder; they demand a high level of intensity from the other players.  The two of them combined with our seniors are providing the leadership our team needs to succeed.”

The position that is providing the most excitement during the first week is the middle position. Lara Marks, Janet Goreham, Ellen Hayes and Denae Gibson have exploded onto court this season.  “The middle position will be the most physical position on the court,” Dockstader said.

DePaul welcomes newcomers, Aly Zavits, Morgan Ingersoll, Denae Gibson, Jamie Klosterman, and Sasha Cherner to the program.

“Most of the freshman came in good shape and were able to keep up with the rest of the returnees,” Dockstader added. “I am most impressed by the physical shape of Denae Gibson. She is not your typical freshman, her aggressiveness is impressive. She is ready to compete for time in the middle with the other returnees.”

DePaul opens their season in Morehead, Kentucky at the Morehead Invitational August 29-30. They open at home against UW-Milwaukee Tuesday, September 9th at the DePaul Athletic Center.
