Blue Demons to Open Season on the Road
Aug. 24, 2011 CHICAGO - The DePaul women's volleyball team will kick off its 2011 regular season this weekend when it travels to Laramie, Wyo., for the UniWyo Wyoming Invitational. The Blue Demons are set to open up play with four matches this weekend beginning on Friday at 10 a.m. against Oregon State. Following the matchup on Friday with OSU, the Blue Demons will take on South Dakota later in the day at 6 p.m. and are scheduled to face Gonzaga and Wyoming on Saturday at noon and 8 p.m., respectively. Each match will also serve as a first for DePaul as the Blue Demons have never matched up against any of this weekend's opponents in their program history. DePaul's opening match will come against the Beavers of OSU who finished last season with a 9-23 record. The Beavers return much of their 2010 squad, including five starters and their libero. South Dakota, who notched a 14-19 record last season, also returns five starters and its libero from a team that finished as Great West Conference tournament runner-up in 2010. The Blue Demons' first match on Saturday comes against Gonzaga, a squad that compiled a 4-27 record overall last season and went 1-13 in the West Coast Conference. In the final contest of the tournament, DePaul will take on host Wyoming. The Cowgirls wrapped up their 2010 season with an impressive 22-10 record and should prove to be a tough test for the young Blue Demons. Notes: Since 1982, the Blue Demons are 15-14 in season openers...a win against Oregon State would snap a six-match losing streak for DePaul dating back to October 26th of last season...DePaul went 1-11 in tournament play last season...freshman Katie Gamsky was named a team captain along with juniors Rachel Aumann and Kelsey Bowler.
