Volleyball Drops Season Opener
IPFW 3, DePaul 0
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The DePaul volleyball team got off to a rough start Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 to a hard hitting IPFW team.
"We learned a lot from today's match," head coach Dawn Dockstader said. "It was our first competition of the season and it showed, as the women were nervous and played tentative. We will return the gym this week and prepare both mentally and physically for next week's Blue Demon Invitational."
The young Blue Demon squad (0-1) had first match jitters, dropping game one 30-17. DePaul and IPFW went point for point early in the game; but the Blue Demons stalled at 10, allowing the Mastodons to go on an 11-2 run and put the game out of reach. IPFW's offense was guided by senior Fabiana Souza, who recorded eight the Mastodons 16 kills in game one.
The Mastodons continued with their hard hitting offense in game two, registering 14 kills and a .371 attack percentage. Souza again paced IPFW with six kills and the Mastodons won game two 30-21.
The Blue Demon offense was sparked by sophomore outside hitter Aly Zavitz in game three. The sophomore had five kills, five digs and three assists. DePaul jumped out to an early lead but a string of errors allowed IPFW to tie the game at 22. Souza, who led all players with a match high19 kills and a .545 attack percentage, recorded the match point with a kill fed to her from Erika Leitzke. Leitzke finished the match with 36 assists.
Zavitz led the Blue Demons with 10 kills, eight digs and three assists. Redshirt freshman setter Mandi Caputo finished the match with 28 assists.
