Volleyball Gets Season Off On Good Note



CHARLESTON, Ill. -  Kate Engel drilled 14 kills, one of three DePaul players reaching double-figures, as the Blue Demons swept Chattanooga 33-31, 30-20, 30-18 in the opening match of the Pepsi/Super 8 Invitational hosted by Eastern Illinois University.


The Lady Mocs (0-1 overall) led throughout most of game one. Amanda Hardyman’s kill put UTC up 28-25. DePaul (1-0) rattled off three straight points to tie the game.

Engel’s kill tied the game at 29 and Lara Marks did the same making it 30-30. Meg Griffin’s kill gave DePaul game point then she teamed with Marks on a block securing the win.

Up 9-7 early in game two, the Blue Demons scored eight of the next 10 points and led by as many as 12 on four different occasions, blistering UTC for a .375 percentage while holding them to -.029.

DePaul’s defense held Chattanooga in check during game three as well, holding the Lady Mocs to a .025 attack percentage and .038 for the match.

Janet Goreham added 11 kills/14 digs while Marks chipped in 10 kills in addition to her .471 hitting percentage and five blocks. Griffin blocked six shots and recorded eight kills in 14 attempts, good for a match-high .571 percentage.

DePaul will be in action again tomorrow when it plays Toledo at 10:00 a.m. and Eastern Illinois at 7:00 p.m.
