Volleyball Defeats Texas-San Antonio in Five Games
DeKalb, Ill. - DePaul's volleyball team won a thrilling five game match against Texas-San Antonio 30-22, 24-30, 28-30, 30-27, 15-11 in its second match of the Northern Illinois Invitational. The Blue Demons improved to 2-0 on the young season. "Stephanie Bishop played incredible today," said Coach Dawn Dockstader. "She wanted the ball when the game was on the line and made all the plays. We didn't play well today, but she really stepped up. She showed why she is such a tremendous player." DePaul controlled the first game from the start. After taking an 18-14 lead, the Blue Demons scored the next four points to build an eight point lead they never relinquished. Bishop delivered five kills and senior Melissa Nordine came up big with two service aces. Texas-San Antonio took games two and three before DePaul bounced back with a big 30-27 win in game four. The Blue Demons reeled off the final three points for the victory evening the match at two games a piece. In the decisive fifth game Bishop took over with two huge kills down the stretch propelling the Blue Demons to a 15-11 victory. With the score tied 6-6, DePaul scored the next five points and never looked back. Bishop led the team with 21 kills and 23 digs. Nordine contributed 16 kills and 11 digs while senior Kara Jakusz finished with 64 assists. "It's nice to be tested when you don't play very well and come through with a big win like this," said Dockstader. "Amy Holmes and Janet Cotter did an exceptional job coming off the bench and really helped us escape with a victory today." Next up the Blue Demons battle Northern Illinois in the finale of the tournament at 8:00 p.m. tonight.
