Volleyball Wins Northern Illinois Invitational

DeKalb, Ill. - In its first tournament of the year the volleyball Blue Demons started the season off on the right foot downing Northern Illinois in the championship game of the Northern Illinois Invitational. DePaul lost the first game 28-30 before reeling off three consecutive victories 30-26, 30-24, 30-23.

After losing a hard fought game one the Blue Demons rallied back to win the second game. Trailing 19-22 Coach Dawn Dockstader called a time out. DePaul responded by going on a 6-0 run and never looked back winning 30-26 to even the match.

The third game was a see-saw affair before DePaul pulled away at the end. The game saw fifteen ties before the Blue Demons scored 10 of the last 14 points to finish off Northern Illinois.

The final game was a blueprint of the third game with DePaul pulling away at the end. With a slim 20-18 lead, the Blue Demons blew the game open with a 10-5 run winning the game 30-23.

Senior Stephanie Bishop led the Blue Demons with 20 kills and 13 digs while senior Melissa Nordine added 13 kills and 23 digs. Sophomore Lara Marks turned in 16 kills and junior Katie Engel pounded 13 kills with 16 digs.

Coach Dawn Dockstader said, "I'm extremely proud of the kids. The team played very well. Northern is a great team and we played very well with this being our first tournament. Lara Marks took out a very experienced middle hitter even though she has little experience. This is a great start to our season."

The 3-0 Blue Demons next take the court against Drake on Friday, September 7, in the opening game of the UW-Milwaukee Invitational.
