Volleyball Kicks Off 2004 Season
Box Score CHICAGO- The DePaul Blue Demon volleyball team hosts cross-town foe Chicago State. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the DePaul Athletic Center and is the season opener for both teams. The Blue Demons hold a, 4-1, record in its last five season openers, including a, 3-0, win over Chicago State in 1999. This is the fifth time the Cougars and Blue Demons have met, with DePaul owning a perfect, 5-0 record. “I am looking forward to kicking off the 2004 season at home,” Head Coach Dawn Dockstader said. “The women have worked incredibly hard during the preseason and the off-season with expectation of making this year, one of the best DePaul has ever seen. We have spent the last two season rebuilding and I am anxious to see these women in action tonight and throughout the season.” DePaul returns 10 letterwinners from last season roster, including four starters. Their young roster which includes eight underclassmen, two juniors and three seniors, have grown-up on the court over the last couple of years and have been mentored and trained Dockstader, who is in her eighth season at the helm of the program. The Blue Demons are lead by seniors Janet Goreham and Amy Holmes. Goreham, a middle blocker, finished the 2003 season with a .297 hitting percentage and as the 10th-best hitter in Conference USA. She also notched 112 total blocks. Holmes, an outside hitter, led the team both offensively and defensively last season. She notched a team high 367 digs and nailed down a .227 hitting percentage. Chicago State returns six starters from a team that finished, 8-22, and tied for fourth place in the Mid-Continent Conference. The Cougars are led by Stacey Cole, who was honored at the conclusion of 2003 season with first team All Mid Con accolades. Following tonight’s action, the Blue Demons will head off to the Mizuno Wildcat Classic in Davidson, North Carolina. DePaul will face Florida Atlantic, Virginia Commonwealth and tournament host Davidson over the holiday weekend.
