Rice Tops DePaul in Tourney Opener

Live Stats for Saturday Matches HOUSTON – The DePaul women’s volleyball team dropped their opening match in the Holiday Inn Select Rice Invitational to the host Owls, 3-0, on Friday night. DePaul came up short in a close first game, 30-27, before dropping the final two games, 30-20 and 30-19. Trailing 24-19 in the first game, DePaul closed to within two points at 26-24. The Owls scored four of the game’s last seven points to take the first by a score of 30-27. The Blue Demons hit .231 as a team in the first game while holding Rice to a combined .214 hitting percentage. Game two saw Rice use a 6-1 run to start the game and never look back in the 30-20 victory. The clincher in game three for the Owls started with DePaul taking an early 6-3 advantage. Rice scored four straight points to take a 7-6 advantage before the two teams traded points over the next five possessions. The Owls took the lead for good at 10-9 and opened up a 17-11 lead forcing a Blue Demon time out. Morgan Ingersoll led DePaul with 12 kills while Stacy Pando finished the evening with 13 digs. Ellen Hayes totaled a dozen digs followed by Sarah Cullen and Emily McGinnis with 11 digs apiece. McGinnis also led the Blue Demons with 28 assists. DePaul wraps up the tournament with matches against Illinois State and UT-San Antonio on Saturday. The Blue Demons and Cardinals tangle at 10 a.m. before DePaul concludes the tournament against the Roadrunners at 4 p.m.
