DePaul Falls to Evansville



Evansville 3, DePaul 1

 

CHICAGO- The DePaul volleyball team dropped a 3-1(30-28, 30-19, 21-30, 30-21) match to Evansville Friday afternoon at the Blue Demon Invitational.  The Blue Demons fall to 0-2 while Evansville improves to 2-1 on the season.

 

The Blue Demons jumped out to a 18-12 lead but a string errors allowed the Purple Aces to get back into the game.  DePaul went up 28-26, but four straight Evansville points allowed the Purple Aces to steal game one, 30-28.  

 

The Evansville offense exploded in game two, hitting .410 as a team.  Anne Teegardin, Julie Walroth and Megan Spurlock all recorded four kills while the team notched a total of 20 kills in game two.  The Aces won game two 30-19.

 

The Blue Demons came out on fire after the break, starting game three with eight unanswered points. Junior outside hitter Morgan Ingersoll piloted the Blue Demon offense and led them to a 30-21 victory.  Ingersoll connected on 10 of her 17 attempts for a .529 attack percentage. Defensively DePaul  allowed only nine Evansville balls to hit the wood and recorded 26 digs.  Freshman Maureen Zigulich led the defensive stop with eight digs and Ellen Hayes followed closely with seven.

 

The Blue Demons took their momentum into game four and kept the match close for the first 16 points before Evansville was able to pull ahead on a 5-2 run.  The Purple Aces never looked back, closing out the game and match 30-21.

 

Evansville finished the match with a .275 attack percentage.  Lacy Haller led all players with a .320 attack percentage, connecting on 12 of 25 attempts.  Defensively, Sarah McClellan and Sarah Treadway finished with 14 digs each.

 

Senior Blue Demon Mandy Moorberg led all players with 19 kills, while Hayes led the defense with 18 digs. Freshman setter Mandi Caputo dished out 52 assists to the DePaul offense.

 

The Blue Demons will be back in action this evening, taking on Belmont at 7:00 p.m.
