Volleyball Drops a Close Match to Belmont

CHICAGO-  The DePaul volleyball team dropped a close 3-2 match to Belmont Friday evening at the DePaul Athletic Center.  The Blue Demon fall to 0-3 on the season while Belmont improves to 3-2.  Both teams will be back in action tomorrow for the final day of the Blue Demon Invitational, action begins at 10:00 a.m.

 

The Blue Demons took the lead from the start and went up by as many as seven points in game one.  Sophomore Aly Zavitz led all players with five kills and a .500 attack percentage, while senior Mandy Moorberg anchored the Blue Demon defense with five digs.  DePaul won game one 30-28.

 

Belmont evened the match score, winning game two 30-17.  Katie Tobiasz and Sara Jacobson led the Bruin offense, each registering four kills on five attempts for a .800 attack percentage.  DePaul's Jordan Ball equaled the Bruin duo and went four for four for a perfect attack percentage.

 

In a pivotal game three, the Blue Demons came back from the break on fire, but fell behind 21-14.  They quickly clawed their way back in the game, tying it at 25 and then took the lead on a Bruins error.  The two teams exchanged the lead a few times before Moorberg knocked down the game point with a kill fed to her from Mandi Caputo.  The Blue Demons won game three 30-28.

 

DePaul was unable to hold their momentum in game four and trailed from the beginning and never recovered.  The Blue Demons hit a dismal .045 while a hard hitting Belmont team recorded a .333 attack percentage.  A trio of Bruins, Jaye Schuler, Erin Jason and Lindsay Cleveland, each registered four kills and attack percentages over .300.  Belmont won game four, 30-19.

 

The Blue Demons took an 8-6 lead into the side change, but again was unable to hang on.  The Bruins put together a 9-2 run, capitalizing on five DePaul errors to close out game five and the match.  Belmont won game five 15-10.

 

Belmonts offense was led by Janson, who recorded 14 kills while setter Colleen Nilson finished with 47 assists.

 

Zavitz led the Blue Demons for a second time this season, recording 14 kills and three block assists.   The Blue Demons defense was engineered by Ellen Hayes, who finished the match high with 17 digs

 

DePaul will close out the Blue Demon Invitational Saturday, taking on Chicago State (0-3) and Valparaiso (3-1) at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., respectively.
