Volleyball Blanks Chicago State

CHICAGO-  The DePaul volleyball team earned its first victory of the season Saturday afternoon at the Blue Demon Invitational.  The Blue Demons shutout Chicago State 3-0 (30-24, 30-21, 30-19) and improve to 1-3 on the season while the Cougars fall to 0-4.

 

The Blue Demon offense came out swinging, registering 53 kills and hitting .223 as a team.  Freshman setter Mandi Caputo guided the offense, dishing out a 47 assists, while senior outside hitter Mandy Moorberg recorded a match high 21 kills for a .224 attack percentage. Junior outside hitter Ellen Hayes followed with 16 kills and a .400 attack percentage.

 

DePaul allowed Chicago State to keep game one close as errors plagued the Blue Demon offense.  Tied at 21 apiece, Moorberg strung together three kills to give the Blue Demons an advantage.  Hayes closed out game with a kill as DePaul won game one 30-24.

 

The Blue Demons dominated games two and three, holding the Cougars to 21 and 19 points respectively.  Game two saw the Blue Demons hit a season high .303 with the tandem of Moorberg and Hayes registering eight and seven kills, respectively.  The duo had some help in game two from freshman middle blocker Jordan Ball, who recorded four kills and a .500 attack percentage.

 

DePaul’s hard hitting offense continued in final game.  Freshman Cristina Correa notched three kills for a .600 percentage and was also credited with two block assists.

 

Hayes led the defense for the second consecutive match, tallying 13 digs and two block assists.  Ball also added a match high three block assists.
